Maxine Conway is a former inmate of Wentworth Correctional Centre.
Maxine before her time at Wentworth was transitioning from male to female with her partner Gary Tucker, until she stabbed him with a pair of scissors.
Maxine was arrested and sent to Wentworth where she endured transphobic comments from Matthew Fletcher and Sue "Boomer" Jenkins along with several other inmates. But in the end the women became close to Maxine and held her in high regard.
Maxine was made Bea Smith's second in command after Bea took over the role of Top Dog, but endured the fight of her life when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Maxine's treatment for cancer would ultimately have her transferred to Barnhurst, where she would be closer to the hospital for treatment.

Having lived for many years as a gay man, Maxine was determined to begin her transition to be a female. At the age of 39 and after many months of psychological counselling, Maxine began her hormonal therapy. 18 months later having formed a relationship with Gary, she made the decision to undergo reassignment surgery.

Maxine saves Bea from being stabbed in the showers
As Will, Vera and Fletch stand outside Officer Chris Bakula tells them that he has a "lovely lot for you today" and smiles as Fletch calls him a tosser, Bakula opens the brawler doors and Kat, Jess are first seen as Bakula tells them to get out, Jess gets out first and is shocked to see Wentworth and she is taken inside as Ferguson wonders out and stands next to Vera, Bakula tells Maxine she is next to get out as Fletch just responds with "Jesus" and gives Bakula a look and she walks past Ferguson as the two stare, Fletch tells her to hurry up and get inside as Vera walks over to Bakula and attempts to help Kat who refuses and uses her crutches to get down. Ferguson stares as the brawlers doors close.
In the corridor Fletch tells Maxine to stand at the wall so he can take the ID photo, he tells Maxine to remove her wig and Maxine refuses, Fletch makes an issue of it and Vera says to Fletch they can make an exception in Maxine's case, Fletch agrees and says that if the governor objects to the ID photo, Maxine will have to pay for another one. Maxine has her ID photo taken and so does Kat and Jess.
Fletch tells Maxine to go into the strip search room and wait in there, Maxine moves there as Fletch pulls Vera aside and tells her that he isn't going to strip search Maxine. Vera then tells Fletch when has he ever strip searched a female prisoner. Vera then tells Fletch that Maxine wouldn't be in Wentworth if she wasn't post op and tells him that she will be there in a minute to do the search. Maxine looks around as Fletch looks at her.
As Bea and Simmo are in their unit Vera brings in Maxine Conway and Jessica Warner and says that they have an hour before dinner if they wish to have a shower, Vera tells Maxine and Jess to get their toiletries ready for the showers, as Maxine tells Vera that she needs privacy to shower and hopes Vera understands, Simmo tells Maxine that it isn't Shangri-La and it's a prison, Vera then says that Maxine can either have her shower later or in the morning before breakfast. Simmo walks over to Bea and makes a gross remark as Vera tells Bea that she is on laundry collection duty.
In the laundry, Fletch tells the women that the new sewing machine is ready to use as Liz is on it, Franky says that the old one is still there and it can't be left there, Fletch says that it is bolted to the table, Franky tells him that it will get in the way. Fletch insults Maxine by calling her 'goldilocks' and tells her to move the table outside, Boomer laughs as Maxine plays Fletch's game and asks if he is addressing her and Fletch snaps back asking if she wanted a written invitation, Liz says that he wouldn't make any of the others move it and Maxine says that if he wants her help he has to 'find some manners', Fletch feigning politeness then asks Maxine again to help move the sewing machine.
Maxine helps Fletch move the table outside and Maxine moves it to where Fletch wants it and then he asks a deeply impersonal question and asks if Maxine actually went through with the operation and Maxine says that Fletch should try it some time as "it does wanders for your complexion". When they both go back inside the laundry.
Linda reveals to Bea that Maxine is a clean skin and is in for stabbing her boyfriend.
Maxine is in the showers as she gets ready to have a shower but Boomer makes her way to the showers and stares as Maxine is about to get undressed. Boomer says hi and asks if she is Maxine and Maxine says yes and asks if she is going to have a shower and Maxine says yes and Maxine says is Boomer going to have one as well and Boomer says yes but Maxine knows and says that Boomer can go first and she insists and Maxine then says that Boomer isn't there to have a shower and that she just wants to have a look. Boomer then insensitively asks "which is it" and then wonders if Maxine "has both" and Maxine is disgusted and leaves, Boomer while Maxine is leaving tells her 'not to be like that' and she has a packet of biscuits riding on it. Boomer then watches as Maxine walks out of the showers.
Maxine is in her cell shaving as the cell door opens and Liz is standing there. Maxine asks if there is anything she can do for her and Liz asks if she has seen Bea and Maxine says that she should be next door. Liz then says she thought that the guards were going to put Maxine into Jacs' old cell and Maxine then asks if the block she's in is the 'tranny' block and Liz laughs saying that if Jacs ever heard that she would've killed her. Maxine asks where Jacs is and Liz tells Maxine that Jacs is dead as Bea killed her and gives Maxine a warning about trying anything., Maxine says that she isn't going to even try anything and Liz says that is good before she leaves.
Bea is in the shower block waiting to have a shower, as several women leave, Jess looks on in fear and quickly gets out of there as Bea puts her stuff on the hook and hides her gun with her stuff. As Bea is having a shower she washes her hair as the water goes down the drain a leg cast belonging to Kat has been taken off. Bea finishes her shower as she manages to get her bra and undies on, she is then attacked by Kat, they fight as Bea tries to find the zipgun, as Bea tries to fight back, Kat slashes Bea a few more times and manages to kick the zipgun out of her hands after it failed to fire and just as Kat is about to stab Bea again, Kat is grabbed by the hair and punched in the face by Maxine. Maxine looks at Bea as she realises what she has just done and Bea thanks Maxine, Maxine tends to her.

Bea limps back to H Block where she sees Maxine in the unit doing her nails, Bea goes up to Maxine and thanks her for what she did, Maxine asks Bea if she is ok and Bea says that she is, Maxine then says that she heard that they found another weapon in "that bitches" cell and Bea goes along with it knowing full well what Maxine means and thanks her again. Bea also tells Maxine for whatever it is worth she shouldn't feel scared of showering with the other women and that she looks great. Bea tells Maxine if there is anything she can do for her all she has to do is ask. Maxine says that there is one thing doing her hair, Liz helps as Bea instructs Liz.

Fletch notices vomit on the floor as he complains as Vera brings up the mop bucket and says that he can mop it, Fletch says that he wont do that and says that one of the women can do it, as he sees Maxine walking down the hall and calls her out and says that he has a job for her, Maxine says that she has a visit and Fletch says that for 20 minutes she doesn't, Fletch demands that Maxine mop the vomit up and Maxine declines saying that she doesn't want to smell of vomit, Fletch says that he doesn't give crap what she smells like she will mop the floor up or he will write her up a charge and Maxine continues to refuse until Fletch says he will cancel the visit unless she mops the floor and then tells her to mop the floor again before he uses his power and practically strikes Maxine in the face with the mop, Maxine falls to the wall as Fletch yells at Maxine and says is it all she's got, Vera tells Fletch to leave as she will clean it up, Fletch walks away calling them both 'pussies' as Vera returns Maxine to her cell as Maxine tries to cover up the bruise, Vera asks if she can help and she does so as Maxine thanks her.
Maxine comes into the visitors centre and she looks around to find her visitor and when she does, she sees Martin Tucker who tells her that she looks great and Maxine asks what is wrong and has something happened to Gary, Martin tells her to sit as he tells Maxine that they wont let Gary visit. Maxine tells Martin that she needs to see Gary so she can tell him that she still loves him, Martin says that he can do that and Maxine says that she needs to tell him herself, Martin reveals that Gary has been headhunted for a job in New Zealand and this takes Maxine by surprise and says that he will be gone for months and wont be back before the trial and Maxine says again that she needs to see him, as Martin tells Maxine that Gary never deserved Maxine as she was too good for his brother.
Bea goes over and sees Maxine standing and says that she noticed that Maxine had her cell door closed all morning and gave her a heads up that the women don't really like that. Bea notices how upset Maxine is and asks if she wants to talk about it as she nods no, and Bea says that if she wants to talk she has 12 years if she changes her mind, Maxine walks away.
Maxine tells Bea her story on Gary and how he cut her hair off
Maxine places a flower on the table as Bea looks at it and then holds it as Maxine tells Bea how Gary cut Maxine's hair off as Gary paid for Maxine's surgery and says that he supported her 100% and then says she was warned by Gary that he was more interested in her as a cross dressing gay man and says that she always had the fantasy of emerging from the chrysalis as a beautiful butterfly and says that Gary preferred his one with a cock. Maxine then says she woke one night to Gary cutting her hair with some scissors and she lost all her hair and it is why she wears the wig, Maxine then says she wants to just see Gary for five minutes to make him understand, as Bea goes to reply an ungodly scream from Marge Novak fills the room.
Maxine rushes over to help her as Marge screams that her veins have gone and Maxine helps her to the floor and holds her as Will rushes over calling for medical assistance when he rushes her he tells the officer to call medical again and tell them they are on their way with Marge, Will asks Marge if she is Hep C positive and she shakes her head no, and says to Maxine that she did a good job, as Boomer yells out for her not to bleed over the food, Maxine is telling Marge that everything will be ok.
Rose goes over to Maxine and asks her if she has any cuts on her hands and takes a look, as Will gets changed he asks her where she wants the contaminated clothes and Rose tells him to just put it into the laundry and he asks how Marge is and Rose while still checking Maxine says that it was her veins and she is also a haemophiliac at the same time. Will says that his uniform that he was given was a bit 'on the small side' and Rose says that it looks good much to Will's amusement. Will then gets checked over by Rose as Maxine is changing, Rose looks and says that Will's shirt is just a bit to small the two share a joke as Will says that she lied about it and talk about softeners as Maxine sees Will's bloodied shirt and pants still sitting on the bed.
Maxine returns to her cell and begins dying the shirt and keeping the pants she stole from medical as she makes a phone call to Martin telling him to come back to the prison so she can talk to him.
Maxine attempts to escape but is tackled by Will
Maxine is in the visitor's centre seeing Martin Tucker where the two talk as Vera is leaving the prison at the same time visiting hours are happening, Vera walks past Linda who asks if she is ok and Vera tells her to 'fuck off', as Martin tries to distract a guard by telling him that the drinks machine 'stole his money', as Vera walks through the building, Maxine goes into the visitors centre visitor toilets. As visiting hours are over, the visitors are in line being signed out by Fletch, Martin is holding up the line as Fletch asks where his pass is and he says that he doesn't know, Fletch tells him to move as Vera comes out from the compound, Vera joins the line and she is bumped into by Maxine who apologises as Vera walks out of work she watches the visitors leave and spots Will who is coming into work on his bike, as Vera calls out to Maxine twice and the second time she stops and turns around realising that Vera knows she is trying to escape she attempts to escape from prison but Will and Vera manage to capture her with Will tackling Maxine who tells Will to just let her go. Maxine is slotted and she asks Vera for her wig back but Vera tells her that she shouldn't of thrown her wig away and Vera leaves leaving Maxine to think about what she has done.

Maxine is Bea's main offsider as top dog, acting as her hench as well as a friend and moral support. She is nurturing towards other inmates, including Bea and Boomer.
Maxine gets breast cancer and has surgery to get her breasts removed. She had decided to hold the fort for Bea while she was in the slot and the delay in treatment meant they had to go with the more aggressive option.
Season 5[]
In episode one, Maxine was first seen mourning Bea's death and is seen when the women have a memorial service in the yard for her. Maxine is furious when Brenda Murphy and Linda Miles are there to clean out Bea's cell. And is later in the yard when Allie Novak returns from hospital and attacks Joan in the yard. Maxine later tells the women that she is set to be transferred to Barnhurst to be closer to hospital for cancer treatment.
In episode two Maxine was transferred to Barnhurst to be closer to the hospital and is last seen being escorted out of the yard by officer Linda Miles.
Maxine's last lines are "Bye Bye.."
